Another non-profit organization based in Prince George has revised its name so the public knows its services can reach a wider range.
The local Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) branch now has 'Northern BC' in its title, saying the change more accurately reflects the residents in the region it caters to, including those in rural and remote communities.
The CMHA of Northern BC notes these particular corners face more challenges, especially when it comes to needing mental health services in the current uncertain times of COVID-19.
"The impact of social restrictions and isolation have significantly increased the risk of mental health problems including depression, anxiety and substance use – something we have sadly seen in the tragic increase in overdose deaths in the region," says Executive Director Maureen Davis.
"CMHA of Northern BC offers programs which can provide vital support to people experiencing mental health challenges, many of which can be accessed over the phone or online."
CMHA says by replacing the name, it also acts as an outreach to the region with virtual events and meetings as the current norm in the COVID-19 era.
With internet access, those that need its free services can participate in a number of programs like BounceBack for building skill son combatting anxiety, or learning mental health first aid.
CMHA has existed in Prince George since 1965, the non-profit explains.
