The dirt-moving is well underway at the site of BC Hydro's new regional headquarters. The initial footprint of the new facility is being etched in concrete as the project passes the two-month stage in the two-year construction program.

"We're starting to see the forms in place, the first round of concrete is in, rebar is poking out now," said BC Hydro spokesman Dave Mosure explaining what he sees from the old building, which is still functioning for the time being. "Building the foundation and perimeter walls is nearing completion."

According to Mosure, the project is on schedule, about two-thirds of the civil work is completed, and the underground electrical and mechanical systems work is underway.

The next major step is pouring the building's main concrete slab, scheduled for early fall. At the same time, a perimeter concrete sidewalk will also be installed, as required by the City of Prince George.

The summertime concrete work will allow for the installation of structural steel during the fall, with the outer envelope of the structure schedule to go on sometime in the winter.

The construction project broke ground on June 11 with a mid-2014 completion estimate. It is budgeted for $25 million in the building phase with a further $23 million invested in the demolition of the current structures once the new facility is operational.

The purpose of the new building is to consolidate operations from three other sites around the region, all with older buildings. It will be the work home of about 200 staff.
