Prince George has a new fire chief. Deputy Chief John Lane will take the position of top firefighter starting on June 1.

"Chief [Jeff] Rowland leaves a legacy of professionalism and pride, and I know he will be truly missed," said Lane. "I am honoured to fill his role and look forward the many challenges that lay ahead."

Lane joined the Prince George Fire Rescue Service in 2005 from the Toronto Fire Services, and over the past few years has been heavily involved in implementing the Emergency Medical Responder program, among other initiatives.

"[Lane] will take over the post of Chief Jeff Rowland who will be retiring in late May after a long and distinguished career with Prince George Fire Rescue Service," said Rob Whitwham, Director of Public Safety and Facilities for the City of Prince George. "[Rowland] started with the city in 1976, eventually being promoted to Deputy Chief in 1995 and then to Fire Chief in 2003."

"We wish Chief Rowland all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his tremendous service to this city," said Mayor Dan Rogers. "We are confident that Deputy Chief John Lane will continue to provide remarkable leadership and dedication to the Prince George Fire Rescue Service."

Lane's promotion left a vacancy in the position of Deputy Chief. Whitwham also announced that this post will be filled with Captain John Iverson who begins those duties starting Monday.
