New emergency procedures are now in effect in for School District 57.

"The ministry has asked for the changes but there were also a few incidents from last year where we had a few "code red" days, said school district chairperson Tim Bennett.

Last year, a 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a "creepy clown" threat. Code red is considered an immediate and imminent threat to the school building population.

"A lot of concerns were brought forward. Now, we can be prepared," Bennett said.

According to the school district, should any school experience an event requiring an emergency procedure, the school or schools affected and School District 57 (Prince George) will communicate through their websites as soon as possible.

The new procedures outline incidents including, lockdown, security concerns in the neighbourhood, what to do in cases of fire, earthquakes or hazardous spills and responding to a dangerous assailant.

Community recommendations were considered and an advisory committee was formed which included school district staff and community stakeholder representatives.

The updated processes are now consistent with B.C. Ministry of Education recommendations and are designed to represent best practice and to standardize procedures throughout the province, according to the district.

The new processes involve various levels of response to hazards.

These categories of response are designed to align appropriate security measures to the level of risk presented.

Parents and guardians will receive further written details regarding the new emergency procedures and staff have received training.
