A new man with a new title became the head of The Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation on Wednesday.

Don Gowan, a businessman with extensive ties to Prince George, will be the new CEO of one of northern B.C.'s largest and most prominent non-profit societies.

He replaces David Wharrie, who retired from the position of executive director of the Spirit of the North in January.

The title change to CEO reflects the "very large" new mandate Gowan will face, said society first vice-president Darren Masse.

The foundation is the fundraising arm of Northern Health, the provincial government body responsible for health care in this region. Since 1991 it has raised more than $21 million.
