Nearly 140 new COVID cases reported in northern B.C. on Friday

The B.C. Ministry of Health reported 138 new cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region on Friday.

For the first day this week, no new COVID-related deaths were reported in northern B.C., leaving the region’s death toll from the pandemic at 299 – including eight deaths reported this week.

As of Friday there were 55 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Northern Health region, including 13 in critical care, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported.

Since the start of the pandemic there have been 27,753 cases reported in the Northern Health region. As of earlier this month, the B.C. CDC does not report the number of active cases.

More than 11.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C. as of Friday, including 516,155 in the Northern Health region.

As of Friday, 90.5 per cent of eligible British Columbians (aged five and older) have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 85.6 per cent have received a second dose. In addition, 56.2 per cent of B.C. adults have received a booster dose.

Vaccination rates in the Prince George local health area remain below the provincial average. As of Feb 14, only 86 per cent of eligible people (aged five and older) had received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 79 per cent had received two doses.
