The Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) has agreed to help Prince George and its surrounding communities to be better prepared for potential wildfires.

Thanks to an approved grant of $126,860, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) is going to partner with the City in implementing an educational initiative on the subject of wildfire safety.

FireSmart will target local residents in the greater area of the northern capital, particularity those with large properties near wooded areas.

“The purpose of the program is to empower property owners to implement FireSmart principles on their property to assist in safeguarding communities from wildfire,” reads an RDFFG statement.

Topics of FireSmart include prevention, preparedness, and education initiatives in hopes of mitigating wildfire risk to those communities.

The service agreement was granted through the UBCM’s Community Resiliency Investment program.

You can learn more about the program by contacting the RDFFG.
