As the battle over the proposed Northern Gateway project heats up, another company is now proposing to build a natural gas pipeline through the region.
Spectra Energy Corporation announced Monday it wants to build a 850-kilometre pipeline to ship natural gas from northeast B.C. to Prince Rupert, where it would be liquified and shipped overseas.
There's no immediate price tag on the plan, but the American energy company and its partner BG Group estimate it will be capable of moving 4.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day, making it a multi-billion megaproject. BG Group is hoping to build a liquified natural gas plant in Prince Rupert to service the pipeline.
Unlike the Northern Gateway plan to ship bitumen from Alberta to Kitimat, the Spectra pipeline would be entirely within B.C., and would be shipping resources extracted in this province.
The proposed route of the Spectra pipeline is further north than the route Northern Gateway would take, if approved.
