Prince George RCMP released Tuesday the names of the two men who went missing in the Salmon River a bit more than a week ago.
They are Ryan Everett Jenkins, 36, of Salmon Valley and Brandon Warren Lawrence, 31.
RCMP also said Jenkins was the one riding a snowmobile on March 7 when he went into the fast-flowing river and added that Lawrence "ran from shore and without hesitation jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue Jenkins.
"Moments later, both men were swept under a large portion of ice covering the width of the river."
Emergency Management BC and the Prince George Search & Rescue Society assisted the Prince George RCMP in searching for the two men for about 2 1/2 days on land and in the air, without success.
The search could be resumed "if river conditions allow for it."
"With our unusually warm winter, ice is not safe to be on," RCMP said. "Police and Prince George Search and Rescue urge all persons to stay off ice in our area and be cautious around all lakes and rivers."
