Highway 16 East has been closed eight kilometres west of the Highway 5 turnoff as a result of a mudslide, according to the Ministry of Transportation and North District RCMP.

North District Operations Communication Center was notified at 12:37 p.m. today.

"Witnesses advise the slide is approximately 50 feet wide and 1 foot deep and it appears that debris is still flowing indicating the side could get worse," North District RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith said.

There have been no reports of any vehicles being trapped or injuries but motorists are being asked to avoid the area. A geotechnical team was heading to the area.

The next update on the Ministry's DriveBC website is scheduled for 5 p.m.
