A woman who survived a serious head-on collision on New Year's Eve is now back in Prince George where she is continuing to recover from her injuries, a family friend said Monday.
Celia Schreiber (nee Sanchez), had been transported to Vancouver for observation following the collision that claimed the life of her son and only child, Framiel Schreiber Sanchez.
Meanwhile, about $4,500 has been raised so far to cover funeral expenses and the plane tickets to fly her brother, Adolfo, up from Durango, in central Mexico. He arrived in Prince George on Saturday.
Not only have the 50 families who are members of the association chipped in but so have members of the community at large, said Northern B.C. Latino Association past president Giulliana Tamblyn.
"This is something about Prince George," said Tamblyn, who has lived in this city for six years after six years in Ontario. "When somebody needs help, it's that sense of community that we can receive here that you maybe wouldn't feel [elsewhere]."
Tamblyn understands they were heading to the Boogie with the Stars charity event to see an Elvis impersonator and had barely gotten onto the highway when the collision occurred.
Police have said Framiel was driving a Ford Explorer southbound on Highway 97 North when it went out of control and collided with a northbound Ford pickup, which then collided with another GMC pickup and all three vehicles left the road.
The two drivers of the northbound vehicles suffered minor injuries and were released from hospital after treatment.
