Morris named to committee to pick next auditor general

Mike Morris will have a big say in who will be named the province's next auditor general.

Mike Morris will have a big say in who will be named the province's next auditor general.

Morris, the rookie MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie, was one of three Liberals named to the five-person committee charged with finding a replacement for John Doyle.

During his six-year term Doyle often sparred with the government. Relations reached a boiling point in the lead up to the May election when an agreement couldn't be reached on whether he should be offered a second term. Doyle has since taken a job in his home country of Australia.

Since Doyle's departure, Russ Jones has been the acting auditor general and revisions have been made to the legislation so that future auditors general will be limited to one eight-year term.

Morris is joined on the special committee by convener John Yap (Richmond-Steveston) and Greg Kyllo (Shuswap), both fellow Liberals, along with NDP representatives Bruce Ralston (Surrey-Whalley) and Kathy Corrigan (Burnaby-Deer Lake).

The committee has been asked to unanimously recommend a new auditor general and report back to the legislature as soon as possible.
