Minor damage to Hwy 16 after flood

Highway 16 has been reopened to single-lane, alternating traffic 77 kilometres east of Prince George.

Highway 16 has been reopened to single-lane, alternating traffic 77 kilometres east of Prince George.

Heavy rain in the area caused a culvert to overflow at Kenneth Creek between Purden Provincial Park and the Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den Protected Area on Saturday afternoon.

A 300-metre section of the road was under water too deep to drive through Saturday afternoon, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure regional director Mike Lorimer said.

"There was some damage to the road, so we made the right choice to close it," Lorimer said.

The road reopened at 7 a.m. on Sunday, with flaggers stationed at either end of the washed out section.

"The water has receded off the road," Lorimer said. "There was some damage to the shoulders. The water undermined the edges of the road."

Ministry crews are working to repair the road, he said, and it will likely take until "early to mid-week" to complete the repairs.

"Until then it will be like any other construction site," he said.
