Hundreds of families attended the city's first Mini Maker Faire at the Civic Centre Plaza on Saturday.

The event, hosted by Two Rivers Gallery, featured live music, artist demonstrations and hands-on science and art activities for all ages.

"It's been great. The inside [area] is packed," Kathleen Angelski said. "It's show and tell, make and tell. It's starting the conversation for people... for people to DIY, do it yourself, and DIT, do it together. Give people confidence to try things on their own -that is what we hope to inspire."

Angelski is the MakerLab coordinator for Two Rivers Gallery and helped organize the event.

While the Mini Maker Faire was the first event of its type in Prince George, but maker fairs have been held in cities around the world, she said.

The crafts and activities on display ranged from the latest technology -3-D printers, remote-control quadcopters, a drawing robot and the popular sandbox construction game Minecraft -to the traditional: glass blowing, wood turning and textile arts.

The event featured 54 different displays in the Two Rivers Gallery, Prince George Public Library and Civic Centre Plaza.

Nicole Botten said she brought her children down to the event for some educational fun.

"I always like to come out to these events, it's just a lot of fun," Botten said. "I like to see what local artists are making."

Jeanette Cunningham said her kids had a blast flying quadcopters, firing rockets and playing at the Lego station.

"It's just something to come down and do with them," she said. "It's hands-on."

Sabina Clark said the live entertainment - provided by musical comedy group AudioBody, local musician Raghu Lokanathan, the Prince George Drumming Pool and Sirena of Tribal Fusion Bellydance -was a blast.

"[My kids] really enjoyed the show by AudioBody," she said.

Ethan Clark, 8, said "the drumming and the Star Wars song" were his favourite parts of the performance.
