Friends and family of an eight-year-old boy killed in an Aug. 3 accident will gather for a memorial service today.

A mass for Luke William Steiner is set for 1 p.m. at Stellaquo Hall, Stellaquo, said Val Haas, funeral director, Grace Memorial Funeral Home.

"It was as though God plucked him off the earth," said Haas.

The incident occured last Tuesday as Steiner walked on a trail near Francois Lake with his mother Therese, his brother Matthias, and sisters Kathleeen and Mae on their way to visit his father Ray, who was working in the bush.

Haas said Therese heard the crack of tree falling and turned to see it falling towards her family. She shouted for everyone to run and Steiner, who was carrying the two-year-old Mae on his back, attempted to flee.

The tree struck Steiner on the head. Mae suffered no injuries apart from a small scratch.

The funeral mass will be officiated by Father Vincent James. In Luke's memory, the family is asking for donations "Luke's Haiti Fund" care of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Fraser Lake.
