Prince George Mayor Simon Yu has decided to postpone his trip to the 2025 Smart City Summit and Expo (SCSE) in Taipei, Taiwan, citing several local factors that require his immediate focus.

In a report going to council at its Monday, March 10 meeting, Yu explained that the decision was influenced by uncertainties surrounding potential tariffs that could increase the cost of travel, as well as the need to fulfill commitments related to the Mayor's Border Alliance.

"While participation in the SCSE has traditionally aligned with our council’s priorities on innovation and sustainability, the current fiscal climate and our regional obligations make it necessary to shift our focus to local initiatives at this time," Yu wrote.

Additionally, Yu highlighted time-sensitive obligations, including upcoming meetings for the Official Community Plan (OCP) and scheduled public hearings, as well as his work with the Mayor's Housing Task Force.

Despite the postponement of the physical trip, the mayor emphasized in the letter that Prince George’s commitment to smart city initiatives and international partnerships remains unchanged.
