People should wear masks at hospitals if they haven’t had the flu shot, according to the Ministry of Health.
It sent a reminder that as of Dec. 1 health centres – like long-term care homes, public health units and outpatient clinics – should be a no-go zone for those without a mask who haven’t taken the seasonal shot.
The goal is to help those at-risk of influenza.
About 3,500 Canadians die each year due to the flu and its complications, the ministry said. In B.C. about 1,400 people die each year, according to Northern Health.
“While the best way for visitors to protect those in health-care facilities is to get vaccinated, masks will be available, free of charge, for those who have not been vaccinated,” the release said. “People infected with the flu are highly contagious and can spread the virus for 24 hours before they even realize they are sick.”
Northern Health spokesman Jonathon Dyck said it’s important to get the flu vaccine, but also know it doesn’t kick in right away.
“The sooner you get it the better,” he said.
The region hasn’t had any lab confirmed cases, but Dyck noted not everyone is tested.
Dyck said the same reminders as always apply, including hand washing and staying home if you're sick.
“If you're not feeling well it is important to consider colleagues around you and friends and family in trying to contain illness,” he said.
The vaccine is free to the following:
• those planning to visit a health-care facility and is available at public health clinics, physician's' offices, travel clinics and pharmacies
• children between the ages of six months and five years
• seniors over 65 years
• pregnant women
• Aboriginal people
• people with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems and their household contacts and caregivers
A nasal spray flu vaccine is free at public-health clinics and physicians' offices to children two to 17 years old who are at risk of serious illness from influenza or who live with someone who is at risk.
