A Prince George man will serve a further 21 days in jail for setting fire to his cell at the Prince George RCMP detachment.

Darryl Bryan Tom, 43, was issued the term Wednesday in Prince George provincial court for one count of arson in relation to inhabited property.

Tom, who had spent 73 days in custody prior to sentencing, was also sentenced to one year probation, issued a 10-year firearms prohibition and assessed a $200 victim surcharge for the July 26 incident.

RCMP said at the time that smoke was discovered at around 10:30 a.m. in the cell block area. The fire was quickly extinguished while all prisoners, including Tom, were evacuated.

Only the cell where the fire was found was damaged, but "a significant amount of smoke was generated."

A lighter was found on Tom after the fire, police said.
