A 19-year-old woman in the community of Esk’etemc near Williams Lake is dead.
A charge of second degree murder has been approved against Waylon Darian Harry, 23 years old.
Harry has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court, via video conference on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.
The BC RCMP North District Major Crime Unit (ND MCU) has been called to investigate the death of the young woman on Monday, Dec. 20 after local police received a call about a possible suspicious death.
Williams Lake police officers first attended with the BC Ambulance Service and confirmed the death of the 19-year-old Indigenous woman.
Harry was arrested inside the residence and the scene was secured.
The woman, who was not identified in the news release from police, and Harry are believed to have been known to one another.
“This is a tragic incident that should never have occurred,” Inspector Lorne Wood of BC RCMP ND MCU, said. “Our thoughts are with all those impacted.”
Williams Lake RCMP units, including Indigenous Policing Services, RCMP Forensic Identification Section and the BC RCMP ND MCU are in contact the local government and continue to investigate the death at this time along with the BC Coroners Service.
