One man was arrested after a four-hour standoff with police at a recreation area near Valemount on Thursday.

Valemount RCMP were called Thursday evening after a man had set up camp at the site and allowed six German shepherd dogs to roam the area unrestrained. When a woman using one of the trails in the area asked the man to leash his dogs, he threatened to sick the dogs on her, a police statement said.

Members of Valemount and McBride RCMP attended to arrest the man for uttering threats, but were rushed by the six dogs. The suspect used the dogs to shield to prevent police from taking him into custody for four hours.

After negotiations, the man was taken into custody without incident. Police seized the dogs, several loaded firearms and ammunition as part of the investigation.

The man is facing several charges and will appear in court in September.
