Legal proceedings are held at the Prince George Courthouse at Third Avenue and George Street.

A man charged with uttering or conveying a threat to cause death or bodily harm to staff of the Ministry of Children and Family Development has fired his lawyer.

Max Gross, an articling student, appeared before Provincial Court Judge David Simpkins on Wednesday, June 4, on behalf of Vancouver lawyer Lawrence Myers. Gross told Simpkins that Myers had been “discharged as counsel” by client Kyle Patrick Bennell.

Bennell was not in court.

“We are asking to adjourn one month for Mr. Bennell to retain new counsel,” Gross said.

Simpkin suggested a shorter delay.

Later on June 4, the online court registry showed Bennell’s case is scheduled to return to court on June 11.

Bennell, born in 1987, was charged Jan. 28 with the alleged Dec. 3, 2024 offence in Prince George. He is also accused of uttering or conveying a threat to a man to cause death or bodily harm to a woman on the same day.

During a hearing on May 21, Gross told the court that Bennell pleaded not guilty. A date for a pretrial conference is to be determined.
