In a recent Citizen story it was reported that drivers may use cell phones while parked at stop lights. The Prince George RCMP would like to correct that, with the help of the pertinent parts of the Motor Vehicles Act.
It is in fact an infraction to handle one's cell phone in any way while in the act of driving, including the times spent idling on roadways. The phone need only be in the driver's hand, to risk a traffic fine, not even in current use.
In general, you are only allowed to use a cell phone while driving if it is a hands-free device, or if you first pull over to a safe siding along the road and are legally parked.
