Ramona Rose and Peggy Brock are the recipients of the 2014 Jeanne Clarke Memorial local history service award and publication award.
These awards are presented by the board of trustees of the Prince George Public Library each year and were awarded during a celebration at the library Sunday night.
Rose is head of archives and special collections at UNBC and has preserved and promoted regional history for more than 20 years. Under her expertise, the Northern BC Archives and Special Collection has achieved its Category A status, which places the archives in a group of only 52 archives in the country that excel in preservation of historical materials of national significance.
Brock was honoured for her book, The Many Voyages of Arthur Wellington Clah: A Tsimshian man on the Pacific Northwest Coast. The non-fiction work offered first-hand stories of the indigenous people's encounters with colonialism. The book is based on more than 50 years of daily diary entries of Clah , who saw many changes during his life from 1831 to 1916, including the arrival of traders, missionaries and miners, the establishment of industrial fisheries, wage labour, and reserves.
Since 1985, the Jeanne Clarke Memorial History Awards have been presented annually to individuals and organizations that have contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of regional history. The awards are in memory of a long time local resident who has a founding member of the local history committee of the Prince George Public Library.
