Two Prince George Crown prosecutors will become provincial court judges in the new year.
Both Susan Mengering and Cassandra Malfair will be sworn in Jan. 9 and remain based in Prince George, the B.C. Provincial Court said Tuesday.
The two new appointments do not represent additions to the existing complement of judges in Prince George, BCPC said. Instead, they will make up for a pending retirement of one judge - whose name was not provided - and to "facilitate a transfer within the court."
Mengering has been a Crown prosecutor since 2003 and initially prosecuted cases in Fort Ware-TsayKeh, Mackenzie, Valemount and McBride. After some time in private practice in Vancouver and Calgary, Malfair joined the Ministry of Justice in 2007.
Both have taken on some high profile cases in recent years.
Most recently, Malfair was the prosecutor in the case against Garrett Steven George, who was sentenced to federal prison last month for the manslaughter death of his common law spouse, Destiny Rae Tom, on the Nadleh reserve nearly three years ago.
Mengering was the Crown for the cases against Mercedes Rae Jewett and Hayden Lee Alwood, sentenced to prison in April for a their participation in swarming-style attacks against two youth, and dumping one of the victims out in a snow bank, also nearly three years ago.
Both graduated from University of British Columbia law school in 2000.
