Liam is the most popular baby name in B.C. this year

Now that 2018 is coming to a close we can finally answer the question we’ve all been wondering: what was the most popular baby name of the year?

What, that wasn't one of your top questions?

Well, according to the latest statistics Liam is in the lead for the most popular baby name in British Columbia this year.

All those Liams are joined by other popular names including Olivia, Emma, Lucas and Oliver according to the Vital Statistic Agency’s preliminary statistics from Jan. 1, 2018 to Dec. 18, 2018.

In 2017, Olivia was the top name overall.

For girls names specifically, Olivia has reigned supreme — it's been the top name for girls born in B.C. for the past seven years. So far in 2018, Olivia once again leads the way followed by Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Chloe, Ava, Sophia, Isla, Emily and Hannah.

Isla is new to the list this year.

After Liam, the top choices for boys born in B.C. in 2018, in order, are Lucas, Oliver, Benjamin, Ethan, Noah, Logan, William James and Leo (which is a new addition to the top 10 in 2018).

In 2017, Benjamin was the number one boys' name in B.C. followed by Liam, Logan, Lucas, Ethan and James which tied for fifth place, then Oliver, Noah, William and Owen.

Olivia was the top girls' name in 2017, followed by Emma, Sophia, a tie between Ava and Charlotte, then Emily, Chloe, Hannah, Amelia and Abigail.

There were 40,565 babies born in B.C. in 2018 — 19,821 of those girls and 20,744 boys. In 2017, there were 44,694 babies born in B.C. which included 21,727 girls and 22,967 boys.
