The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 43 is hosting the 5th Annual Red Shirt Marathon, "A Walk of Honour," Saturday May 31, at the Fort George Park bandshell.
There will be 159 Canadian honour flags set up in the park for fallen soldiers, including one that has just been made for Cpl. Greg Matters. The flags are not often displayed en masse, so it will be a moving sight to behold.
Three of the flags are currently set up at the Legion for local soldiers Matters, Matthew McCully and Darren Fitzpatrick. A flag is on order for fallen journalist, Michelle Lang, formerly of the Prince George Free Press, but will arrive after the Red Shirt Marathon.
Hazelwood Signs has donated the signs for all of the flags.
The walk is to show support for our troops. Proceeds raised will go to Winch House, a home for veterans, first responders and associate organizations.
The five-kilometre walk or run starts at 10:00 am.
Registration is $20 and includes a red shirt. Pledge sheets are available through the Royal Canadian Legion (1116 Sixth Avenue, 250-562-1292). You can register at 9 a.m. the day of the event.
There will be a concession, hosted by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and entertainment.
This is a wonderful family event to show your support for our troops.
