Legal battle over Columbus clean up bill continues

The city's court action against the owners of the old Columbus Hotel is continuing to wind its way through the courts.

A hearing is scheduled for July 27 in Vancouver to decide whether permission needs to be granted to take the cast to the B.C. Court of Appeal, city spokesperson Mike Davis said Thursday.

The city has been in a legal battle with Columbus owner Rob Gibson over who should pay the $175,000 it cost to demolish the building following an August 2008 fire and clean up the Third Avenue downtown site.

In March, the city filed a notice of appeal against a B.C. supreme court justice's decision last month to turn down the city's request for a "summary judgment" that would have compelled Gibson to pay the amount without going to a full-fledged trial.
