WestJet has finished its 11-week temporary direct service from Prince George to Las Vegas.

WestJet spokesperson Robert Palmer said it's too early to determine if the service will be brought back on a permanent basis.

"It was always understood to be a trial, the results of which would be evaluated in the future as we take delivery of additional aircraft in the months and years to come," Palmer said. "There was never an intent to make a decision on permanent service immediately following the end of the trial."

The airline offered flights twice weekly to Las Vegas from Sept. 10 to Nov. 26.

"For competitive reasons, airlines do not reveal load factors for individual routes. However, what we can say is that the service got off to a slow start in September, but showed some improvements in October and November," Palmer said. "Overall, the route did not perform as well as we had hoped, but that's the reason why it was established on a trial basis. Whether it will return at some point in the future has yet to be determined."

Prince George Airport marketing and communications manager Lindsay Cotter said the slow start fits the pattern seen with the direct flight from Prince George to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. That flight has been offered seasonally for six years - first by Air Transat and then by WestJet.
