A landslide near Valemount on a slope close to Swift Creek is threatening the water supply of the village, located 292 km southeast of Prince George.

A landslide threatening homes and the water supply of the Village of Valemount remains active, according to an update issued by the village on Tuesday.

Engineers were on the scene of the slide on Thursday to monitor and access the landslide.

“There continues to be no significant change observed at the slide area or creek. The public is strongly cautioned to avoid the area. It is an active landslide area and conditions can change without warning,” the statement said. “The evacuation alert issued on Saturday, July 31 remains in effect for approximately 40 properties on the northeast side of Main Street beginning at William Road, and extending beyond the Swift Creek bridge to the end of Main Street in Electoral Area H of the Regional District.”

The slide also threatens Valemount’s water supply, which is sourced through Swift Creek. On Tuesday the village strengthened its water restrictions to Level 3 until further notice and a precautionary measure, and all Valemount water users are urged to consider alternative water supplies if the landslide interrupts the village water supply.

Trails in the area have been closed for public safety.
