School's finally back in session and with that is the scramble to find supplies needed for classes.
For those families in need in Prince George, that could become a barrier to a student's education. To prevent that from happening, 600 local students received a backpack full of items needed for school like pencils, pencil cases, notebooks and rulers from Telus Community Ambassadors.
"We all remember September as an exciting month when we were young - getting ready to see your friends and start a new grade," said Lorri Kidd, president of the Prince George Telus Ambassadors. "I can only imagine how challenging it is for kids and their families who don't have the means to purchase all of the tools required in the classroom these days. Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, learn and grow, and we're proud to support our future generations by setting them up for success."
School boards determine how many students are in need of the backpacks across the region and local Telus Ambassadors send the packs to the appropriate schools before the start of he school year. Students in need, identified by the school board or school, then got the backpack on the first day of school.
Across Canada the ambassadors have handed out 10,500 backpacks, with a total of 5,840 in B.C.
Telus Community Ambassadors teams are made up of of current, former and retired Telus employees who volunteer to support literacy programs, pack care items for Canadians in need during disasters, and stuff stockings to donate to families in need during the winter holidays.
