More than 1,000 people showed up at the Coast Inn of the North on Monday to drop off resumes in hopes of landing a job on BC Hydro's Site C dam project.
While organizers counted 1,018 people, Hydro spokesman Bob Gammer said the total was likely higher.
With the doors about to close at 7 p.m., Gammer said some of the representatives from Peace River Hydro Partnership, the main contractor for the project's civil works, went out into the hallway and collected resumes in bunches.
Even before the Prince George job fair, more than 3,000 had been collected at events in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Chetwynd. With a job fair in Quesnel on Tuesday and two more scheduled for Mackenzie and Fort Nelson, Gammer estimated the total will be "well over 5,000" by the end of next week.
Contractors involved are looking to fill just 600 positions but Gammer said that should not discourage anyone from applying. It's an eight-year project and they're predicting workers will move onto
"There is going to be a need for a lot of people so we want everyone to apply and to make sure the contractors are well aware of your skills and your experience and what you bring to the table as a potential worker on this project," Gammer said.
