It was a month that had plenty of ups and downs and curves. The first 10 days saw a couple of bursts of very mild air resulting in two record daily temperatures. This was followed by the first real intrusion of arctic air, accompanied by a bit of snow and some really cold wind chills, then some of the coldest temperatures experienced in the last few winters. Temperatures bottomed out between the 16th and 20th with a chilly minus 34 on both the 18th and 19th. Arctic air retreated with temperatures moderating back to well above normal by the 22nd and then remaining mild through the end of the month. In the end with the bumpy start, then the big chill and the mild end, temperatures ended up almost three degrees above normal.
On the precipitation side of things, it was pretty dry but not without some excitement. Two major snowfalls on the 21st and 28th produced some challenging driving conditions. Snowfall still ended up well below normal while rainfall was very close to normal. Total precipitation, rain and melted snow ended up about half the normal for the month.
Into the record books, January will show a mild but dry month.
