In large-scale emergency, here's where Prince George people should go for information

Beware of social media sites that ask for money or donations to help evacuees

CN Centre was turned into an evacuation centre for people forced to flee their homes during the wildfires of 2018.

With this being flood and wildfire season, in the event of a large-scale emergency that affects us in Prince George the city has some advice on what citizens can do to help.

The first piece of advice from the city’s communications department is to source an official government website or social media page for information.

Go to the BC government website for up-to-date advice on how to deal with a local emergency.

When people are being evacuated to Prince George, as they were earlier this week when residents of the Peace River Regional District were forced to leave their homes due to the fires north of Fort St. John, the city is ready to assist them with its Emergency Support Services team.

City staff work closely with the BC Wildfire Service, Emergency Management BC, municipalities and regional districts across the province to be prepared to accept evacuees and provide the help they need, providing food and accommodation vouchers as well as other necessities.

More information is available on government social media links:

The city advises people to only share information during an emergency that was obtained directly from an official source.

Beware when connecting to services through Facebook or Facebook Messenger which ask for donations or claim to support evacuees. The city does not hire individuals or private companies to provide support services. Donations or supplies are currently not being accepted, nor is there a need for emergency volunteers at this time.

Citizens interested in volunteering if the need does arise can call the Service Centre at 311 or 250-561-7600 to leave contact information.

More information can be found on the city's emergency response page
