The civilian-based organization that investigates police-related incidents of death or serious harm is asking for anyone who may have seen a stabbing while Prince George RCMP were trying to arrest a man downtown last week to step forward.

The Independent Investigations Office is looking into a Mon., Dec. 8 incident when, according to Prince George RCMP, at about 11 p.m. police were trying to arrest a man near Third Avenue and Dominion Street because he had outstanding warrants.

Police said that the man, one of three officers had been dealing with at the time, stabbed himself in the neck and stabbed one of the arresting officers before he was subdued and rushed to hospital.

"The IIO has information that suggests there were witnesses in the area at the time of the incident and that video recordings or still photographs may have been taken," the IIO said Tuesday. "Anyone with information is asked to contact the IIO at 778-988-1041 as it is crucial that investigators speak with potential witnesses."
