Icy roads in a shaded area along Highway 16 East caused two accidents involving six vehicles early Monday.

A single vehicle accident happened about 94 km east of Prince George when a tractor trailer rig, eastbound to Edmonton, went off the highway. The driver was taken to University Hospital of Northern B.C. with minor in juries.

A second accident occurred about 92 km east of Prince George involving five vehicles, said RCMP Sgt. Al Steinhauser who attended at the scenes.

He said the accident at the 92-km mark happened when one vehicle made a pass, causing a chain reaction of vehicles sliding into one another. The vehicle that made the pass continued on its way, and Steinhauser doubts if the driver even realized what had happened in the wake of it.

"The vehicles involved all sustained some type of damage," said Steinhauser.

Two people in the five-car incident were taken to UHNBC with injuries.

Steinhauser said although the highway basically offered winter condition driving, "the early spring can sometimes be deceiving."

He said this particular area was shaded, slippery and ice covered due to melting and overnight freezing. He added RCMP are continuing to investigate the incidents.
