A fire damaged the 100-year-old Knox United Church building early Thursday morning.
The church, which is no longer an active place of worship, was built in 1922 to replace a smaller church in South Fort George that dated back to 1910, according to information released by The Exploration Place. The church, located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Brunswick Street, is currently home to a child care centre and there are plans to convert the building into a performing arts venue.
Firefighters received a report of fire alarms at the building just before 6 a.m., according a statement issued by the Prince George Fire Rescue Service.
“Upon arrival, crews found flame at the rear doors of the building. The call was upgraded to a commercial structure fire and more crews were dispatched,” the statement said. “Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire.”
No one was injured in the fire, but the damage to the city’s oldest surviving church was estimated at $20,000. Restoration workers were on the scene Thursday morning, cleaning up the damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
