Housing starts down from last year

The pace of house construction in the city is continuing to go through turbulence, according to the latest Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation numbers.

As of the end of May, construction had begun on 33 new single-family homes in and around the city, 14 fewer than by the same point last year.

After peaking at 104 starts by the same point in 2007, construction plummeted to just 17 starts for the first five months of 2009.

Since then, the total has been climbing and the upward trend appeared to be continuing at the start of this year. However, numbers have since faltered.

Looking at multiple family, there were starts on three units in May, compared to 29 for the same month last year. The year-to-date total now stands at seven, compared to 38 by the same point last year.
