House construction takes off in May

After a slow beginning to 2011, starts on new homes in and around Prince George edged closer to last year's total, according to recently-released Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

After a slow beginning to 2011, starts on new homes in and around Prince George edged closer to last year's total, according to recently-released Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

By the end of May, there were 37 starts so far this year, seven shy of the total reached by the same point in 2010. After the first three months of the year, there were just five starts in 2011, compared to 18 over the first quarter of last year.

There were no new starts on the multiple family front in May but at 36, the year-to-date total remains at 36 units, twice the amount reached by the same point last year, thanks to the seniors-oriented development going up next to the Commonwealth Health Centre downtown.

CMHC predicts there will be starts on 145 single-family homes and 55 multiple units by the end of this year.
