Weekend temperatures above 30 C prompt special weather statement from Environment Canada.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Prince George as hot temperatures are expected this weekend.

A strengthening ridge of high pressure will bring rising temperature to interior B.C. on Friday through Sunday night.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 30’s with overnight lows in the low to mid-teens.

Environment Canada warns to watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, and people working or exercising outdoors.

The governmental organization is reminding people to drink plenty of water, even before they’re thirsty, and stay in a cool place.

The forecast for Friday, July 30 indicates a high of 30 C and then on Saturday, there will be a high of 32 C before the temperature drops just slightly to 29 C on Sunday, Aug. 1.

The forecasted hot weather prompted the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George to urge residents to use extreme caution if they choose to light a campfire over the weekend.

While the campfire ban has been lifted in the Prince George Fire Centre area, the fire risk in parts of the region district remains high to extreme, a statement issued by the district said. The district is asking residents to avoid burning of any kind over the long weekend, especially in the Robson Valley area where the fire risk is rated as high to extreme.
