The neonatal intensive care ward at UHNBC will have 13 new monitors after Variety made a six-figure grant to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.
The $100,000 grant from the children's charity will allow the hospital to install monitors with modern technology and allow for standardization between the equipment used in the neonatal ward and the pediatrics department.
"As the only [neonatal intensive care unit] in the north, it is critical that we have specialized monitoring equipment to care for premature and acuity ill neonates," hospital manager of maternal child services Belinda Maidment said in a news release. "These 13 new monitors, along with our highly trained [neonatal] caregivers, help ensure the best possible care for these at risk newborns and their families."
Variety executive director Bernice Scholten thanked the charity's donors for allowing it to make the substantial grant.
"Variety is proud of its partnership with the hospital and our ability to support pediatric and neonatal care to local families," Scholten said. "We receive support from families all over B.C., and it is an immense pleasure to add a number of donations together to have such a significant impact at this hospital. Many moms and dads will be able to breathe easier, knowing that their child is getting the best care possible, right from the start."
