A $750,000 project is underway to increase the amount of parking available at the hospital.
Roughly 52 new parking stalls will be created in the University Hospital of Northern B.C.'s front visitor's lot by the time work wraps up in the fall, according to Northern Health.
The additional stalls will be created by widening Edmonton Street and creating angled parking on both sides of the street. The parking lot itself will also be adjusted to allow for angled parking.
While Edmonton Street will still run in both directions with a bus stop, there will no longer be general traffic turning left from Edmonton Street onto 15th Avenue.
Enhanced crosswalks and sidewalks to bus loops and parking lots across 15th Avenue and an exit-only access point to 15th Avenue west in front of the Learning and Development Centre, currently under construction, will also be created.
"We knew we had to find a unique method to increase visitor parking at UHNBC, and working with the city of Prince George has allowed us to do this," said Michael McMillan, Northern Health's chief operating officer for the northern interior, in a press release.
The city transferred the paved road and sidewalk and right of ways to Northern Health, said planning director Ian Wells.
By the end of the month, an additional 55 parking stalls will be available on Alward Street in the space formerly occupied by the old Nechako Building, bringing the total number of new parking stalls this fall to 107.
