The Ice Disco at the Oval held Feb. 12 was a fundraiser for the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society.

The event saw a sound system and lightshow bring the retro roller-disco vibe to the Ice Oval as families gathered safely outdoors to enjoy the mild temperatures. There were also food trucks, face painting and fireworks to add to the festivities.

Prince George McDonald's sponsored the event and were on site to offer free refreshments, encouraging those in attendance to donate to the cause. The community stepped up and raised a total of $8,000 at the first-of-its-kind event organized by Kyle Sampson.

"We are so thrilled about how the whole community came out for the event," Donna Flood, executive director of the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society, said. "When Kyle came and offered to put on this event I thought it was brilliant because nothing has happened at the oval of this size before and we were thrilled to see everyone - the families - out there so happy and then to have all the community support like from McDonald's - not only were they donating to the cause they were present and being part of the community during the whole event. When a fundraiser like this happens and you have so much community involvement it makes it even that much better."

Brian Boresky, owner-operator of the Prince George McDonald's restaurants, thanked the community for its support.

"It is such a good cause and it's our philosophy to give back to the community that supports us," he said.

The collaboration started between McDonald's when Sampson approached operations manager Eric Simmons and asked McDonald's to sponsor the event.

"We agreed to sponsor the event and then our customers took it a step further with their donations so we thank them very much for their support," Simmons said.
