Hoist the flag and give a cheer

During Canada's 143rd birthday Thursday, thousands are expected to turn Fort George Park into a sea of red and white flags, hats and T-shirts as they celebrate Canada Day in Prince George.

"Everyone should celebrate the birthday of our nation," said Marlies Gruelich, organizer and executive director of the Multicultural Heritage Society.

"We need to acknowledge and appreciate the freedoms we have in this country as compared to other world areas. We should all wave our flag proudly as Canadians,"

She said the opening ceremonies will be shortened this year.

"Both Shirley Bond (MLA for Prince George Valemount) and Pat Bell (MLA for Prince George North) have said they are not available, and it looks like Dick Harris (MP for Cariboo-Prince George) will not be here either, but we will have Mayor Dan Rogers and Chief Dominic Frederick of the Lheidli T'enneh," Greulich said.

Rain or shine the show that has attracted up to 15,000 will go on.

Greulich is seeking volunteers to help out with parking security, loading and unloading, setting up. and face painting. Call 250-563-8525 if you can lend a hand. Check out the program in The Citizen.
