An early morning hit-and-run resulted in a mess for city crews.

News of a water hydrant getting hit at 10th Avenue and Central Street West came in at 5:30 Tuesday morning, said city public works associate director Gina Layte Liston.

Crews shut off the hydrant and worked to clear out the adjacent catch basins, which was compounded by the recent snowfall.

"The equipment is going and we're making sure that the slush and stuff that would be created by water and snow together... was flowing off into those catch basins," Layte Liston said.

The fire department has been informed that the hydrant isn't currently in service and it will be replaced within the work week, said Layte Liston.

A city investigation into the incident is likely to occur. "Anytime we have these types of things we like to be able to find a third party charged for it," Layte Liston said. "But that is a process and when there's a hit and run it's not always that easy."
