Hiring exemption secured for aboriginal school

The quest to establish an aboriginal choice school in Prince George has cleared a major hurdle as the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has granted the school district the right to give preference to first nations when hiring teachers and support staff.

The quest to establish an aboriginal choice school in Prince George has cleared a major hurdle as the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has granted the school district the right to give preference to first nations when hiring teachers and support staff.

Called a "special program exemption," it was granted June 17. A similar exemption has been in place for aboriginal support staff across the district but it's the first time one has been granted for a school, said Charlotte Henay, the school district's aboriginal education principal.
