About 60 Prince George and McBride individuals searching for three missing hikers scored a victory Monday in the rough and remote Sugarbowl-Grizzly Valley.
When the young men, aged 20 and 21, failed to return home after a planned day of hiking about 80 km. east of Prince George last Sunday, two family members and a family friend who happened to be Jeff Smedley, search manager with Prince George Search and Rescue, headed up the trail about 2 a.m. to find them.
The initial searchers soon realized it was a vast area to cover, so a search team was mobilized to begin searching at dawn.
Smedley said the three men got into trouble when they missed the trail markers along the trail to Grizzly Den and Raven Lake. Realizing they were lost, one of them decided to climb higher to get a better view and hopefully see land marks that would give them a location. He left his pack sack with his friends, expecting to be gone about 15 minutes, but somehow got separated from the others.
