Highway 16 East reopens

Highway 16 has been reopened to single-lane, alternating traffic 77 kilometres east of Prince George.

Highway 16 has been reopened to single-lane, alternating traffic 77 kilometres east of Prince George.

Heavy rain in the area caused a culvert to overflow at Kenneth Creek between Purden Provincial Park and the Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den Protected Area on Saturday afternoon.

A 300-metre section of the road was under water too deep to drive through Saturday afternoon, Ministry of Transportation regional director Mike Lorimer said.

The road reopened at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, with flaggers stationed at either end of the washed out section.

As of this update, no one was available for comment on the possible damage caused by the washout.
