Highway 16 has been reopened to traffic east of Burns Lake following a fatal collision that closed the stretch overnight.

North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said a 64-year-old woman was killed in a head-on crash between two pickup trucks on Sunday just before 5 p.m.

The collision prompted closure of a 3.4-kilometre stretch between Kelway and Freeport roads with a detour for light traffic to allow investigators to collect evidence and to clear the wreckage. The scene was reopened to traffic just before 10 a.m. on Monday.

The two drivers were taken to hospital with injuries.

"Weather and road conditions at the time were reported to be poor and may have played a role in the collision," Saunderson said.
