There are traditionalists and then there are the high tea traditionalists who will all raise their pinkies in solidarity to express their great joy when the High Tea for Hospice takes place on May 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Kinsmen Community Complex.

This event will follow all high tea etiquette and ladies and gentlemen who attend can come as they are or wear their Sunday best, including the most intriguing fascinators and delicate gloves to complete a lady's ensemble.

"I've done many fundraisers for hospice over the years and I wanted to do a spring fashion show so why not make it a fundraiser, too," said Laura Hansen, owner of Qurvy Queen and an organizer of the event. "I was thinking that no one does a high tea here anymore and it's near Mother's Day and what a nice combination that would be."

Hansen was in Victoria recently and attended high tea at the Empress Hotel to make sure she's got everything right and High Tea for Hospice will be as close to the real thing as she can get it, she said.

"There's going to be three types of finger sandwiches: ham salad, egg salad and, of course, cucumber and cream cheese," said Hansen.

A highlight for many will be scones served with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry jam, petit fours and cupcakes, chocolate dipped strawberries and other fruit. As for beverages there will be Earl Grey and honey lavender tea and for those wishing to otherwise indulge mimosas will also be served.

As part of the afternoon's entertainment local artist Janice Parker will be making art live.

"Janice does amazing acrylic florals," said Hansen.

The completed piece will be the grand prize for the Heads or Tails game played during the event.

There will also be a silent auction and the fashion show featuring clothes from Qurvy Queen, Butterfly Boutique and Park Avenue Apparel.

Hansen wants the proceeds from the High Tea for Hospice to go towards staff education that includes specialized knowledge of palliative care.

Hansen is putting out a call to borrow about 50 tea cups. She's already got 100 but she is anticipating 150 guests at the event and wouldn't want to fall short.

Call Hansen at 250-564-7185 to loan tea cups or for more information. The event takes place at the Kinsmen Complex, 777 Kinsmen Place. Tickets are $30 each and are available at Qurvy Queen, 1276 Fourth Ave., and at the Prince George Hospice Society office, 1506 Ferry Ave.
