Millie Allen didn't want any recognition for saving the life of a fellow Prince George Chateau resident but she got lots Friday as several dignitaries bestowed kind words and awards upon her to recognize her heroism.
On Nov. 4, 2015 the fire alarm went off at the Prince George Chateau.
"I ran out the door and Vicky was two doors down so I ran to her door and her door was open and there were flames and smoke and I just went 'holy s--t!'" said Allen. "I heard her calling for help and I just said 'Vicky, I'm over here - it's Millie. Come over to the door' and she came out."
Allen helped her friend out of the room and because Vicky wasn't dressed, Allen quickly got her a housecoat to cover up.
"The firemen were there like that," said Allen with a snap of her fingers. "They had the fire out and the ambulance was there taking care of her. I'm very happy I did what I did."
On Friday morning, MLAs Mike Morris and Shirley Bond presented Allen with
an award for saving her neighbour from harm with the Fire Commissioner's Commendation Plaque.
"We ask ourselves what would we do if we were in a circumstance where we were called to step up and you took personal risk and I know that is a scary thing to do but you answered the call and it's either fight or flight and I have the feeling that Millie's quite the fighter," said Bond. "So I want to congratulate you on being a recipient of this important commendation today."
Mayor Lynn Hall, on behalf of Prince George city council, thanked Allen for her bravery and presented her with a recognition award.
"This award is for demonstrating outstanding heroism, bravery and resourcefulness to save a neighbour's life at considerable risk to yourself," said Hall. "So Millie, on behalf of the city I want to thank you very much. I want to thank you for what you've done for your neighbour, and not just your neighbour, but the entire community at the Chateau."
Terry Ree, a fire service advisor, spoke on behalf of the fire commissioner Gordon Anderson, who could not attend the event, while Bill Raglin, Prince George Chateau executive director, spoke about how proud he was to have Allen as a member of the Prince George Chateau family.
"Thank you very much," said Allen. "I didn't do it to be a hero or anything. I just did it."
